"The finest in the world." - Winston Churchill, 1900
Across 200 years of distinguished service, The Gordon Highlanders saw service in almost every major global conflict that the British Army has taken part in: from Waterloo, to Doornkop, and from the Somme to the beaches of Normandy. In 1994, they would take their leave, amalgamating with the Queens Own Highlanders to form The Highlanders. They would amalgamate again in 2006 to form the 4th Battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland, or 4SCOTS. You can read about the last actions of The Regiment and its closing days here:
The Gordon Highlanders were founded in, and represented the North East for their entire tenure. The Regiment adopted traditions that would be upheld across their distinguished service, making them a fighting force that stood out as unique to this region of Scotland.
- Cap Badge and Motto – The Gordon Highlanders adopted the crest and motto of Clan Gordon upon its formation for their cap badge, in recognition of the Dukes of Gordon who formed and led The Regiment. The crest depcits a Royal Stag with a crown at its base surrounded in ivy. The adopted motto was Bydand, meaning Steadfast.
- The Kilt – As a Highland Regiment, The Gordon Highlanders wore the kilt as part of their combat uniform. This tradition lasted from their origins, til the end of the First World War, over 120 years. The kilt would remain a staple of The Regiments ceremonial dress and for Pipers up until 1994.
- Gordon Tartan – The Regiment adopted Clan Gordon’s tartan to be used for their kilts and trews. Created in 1793, the tartan features gorgeous shades of green with a distinctive yellow stripe. Proudly worn by The Gordon Highlanders, and still proudly used by veterans and the Museum to this day.
- Pipe Music -The Pipers of The Gordon Highlanders were a major part of their formation, motivating The Regiment during their campaigns across the world. The tradition of Piping and Pipe Music was upheld across the 200 years of The Regiment’s service. The Museum still hosts Pipe Recitals in its Regimental Gallery to this day.
